Tutorial One: IT and Ethical Issues

Definition of Information Technology/Information Communication Technology
"The development, installation, and implementation of computers systems and applications" (the free dictionary, 2010, paragraph 2)

How is this form of Technology prevalent in our society?  How common place has it become?
"The single most important item in 2008 households is the computer" (Home Computers, 2010).  The Personal Computer (PC) along with iPod Nano's , nintendo, playstation, xbox are common place items in the average family home.  Mostly they are a form of entertainment linking us into stimulating and interactive occupations.  The children of today have no fear of technology as they are exposed to it from the day they are born.

What IT devices or systems do I feel comfortable and competent using?
I feel comfortable using my Mac computer and my Windows based Acer Laptop.   I also enjoy using our iPod Nano when I go for a walk, however I have no idea how to download music to it.  I love going on line and checking my facebook.  I find emails can be a bit tedious but I enjoy deleting the crap out of my inbox.  We have an Xbox but to be honest I never get time to use it.

IT on fieldwork
I found it interesting that the Occupational Therapist (OT) was using paper diary.  To me I thought it would be a lot easier to use a Blackberry, or an IPAC.  In maintaining confidentiality these types of devices would be a lot safer as they require passwords.  The only other technology used was cellphones and PC's which were linked to the hospital network.

Ethical implication from capturing, sharing and transforming of information via IT devices or systems.
For OT's I think the main ethical issue is client confidentiality and the problem with hackers.  Also the storing of personal information and it's longevity under ever changing systems.

Definition of Computer Ethics
"Computer ethics is a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computer professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social conduct."  (computer ethics, 2010, paragraph 1).

Definition of Intellectual Property
"an intangible asset such as copyright or patent".  (the free dictionary, 2010, paragraph 3).

Social Justice
"a concept of a society in which justice is achieved in every aspect of society."  (the free dictionary, 2010, paragraph 1).

Informed Consent
"a phrase often used in law to indicate that the conscent a person gives meets certain minimum standards."  (informed consent, 2010, paragraph 1).

My Own Words
In Occupational Therapy IT is a tool used to assist us with client therapy, research and theory justification and helps us to complete our daily task in a timely and efficient manner.
